Executive Director
Description:
The Executive Director of the Public Interest Intellectual Property Advisors is responsible for overseeing and directing the overall management and operations of the organization. Develops, articulates, and implements a strategic plan for PIIPA to serve its purpose of providing intellectual property legal services to developing countries in the public interest.
- Develops, modifies and implements standards, criteria, and procedures to assure high quality work.
- Establishes budgetary priorities to meet goals and objectives as agreed to with the Board of Directors. Obtains funding from a variety of sources, writing proposals and promoting PIIPA with grantmakers.
- Creates and implements work plans consistent with budget and compliance standards. Assures compliance with legal obligations relating to nonprofit status.
- Provides direction, guidance, training, and evaluation to all staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Oversees core matchmaking operations of PIIPA, and fosters collaboration with IP Corps volunteers and local chapters, assistance seekers, donors, and advisors.
- Assures compliance with by-laws, applicable laws and regulations, grant agreements, and PIIPA policies and procedures.
- Maintains clear and efficient communications and records with Board of Directors, staff, consultants and vendors. Maintains minutes of board resolutions.
- Participates in relevant seminars, conferences, and websites, in person or in writing.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, International Relations, Law or related field.
- Minimum of 4 years overseeing and managing international outreach activities.
- Minimum of 4 years of international donor relations experience, including presentation of concept notes, proposal writing and oversight of compliance matters.
- Minimum of 3 years of management experience with an international organization. Must be able to apply strong leadership skills resulting in collaboration between organizational partners, including law firms, government agencies and other constituents associated with PIIPA.
- Minimum of 2 years reviewing, assessing, and building international outreach programs. Must be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of proposals relative to target groups, donor’s goals, and internal mandates.
- Proficiency with computers, including knowledge of website management, social media, spreadsheets, and word processing, plus willingness and ability to learn further as necessary. Ability to present information in a professional and attractive manner.
- Experience and ability working within culturally diverse environments, in some cases including direct work with NGOs and international partners.
- Good interpersonal skills, including ability to interact effectively with donors, board members, volunteers, government agencies, and other partners. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and flexibility in adjusting to changing requirements.
- Strong ability to train and evaluate staff, supervise volunteers, and engender team building.
- Excellent command of written and verbal English. Competencies with French, Spanish, and other languages preferred.
- Excellent command of communicating, negotiating, and managing daily operations via the internet and telephone.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain sound judgment when confronted with various constraints.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to interpret and communicate a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, and diagram form.
Compensation: Performance-based, depending on achievement of milestones.

Communications Manager (PIIPA Intern)
The Communications Manager of the Public Interest Intellectual Property Advisors will assist with outreach to developing country assistance seekers and intellectual property professional volunteers worldwide to support PIIPA’s matchmaking activities. Responsibilities include support for fundraising and new PIIPA chapter formation, e.g. at law schools. Knowledge of web-based communication and social networking required. Experience with intellectual property, innovation management, sustainable development, and legal aid desirable.
Area of Focus: Communications Access and Infrastructure, Community Development, Law and Legal Assistance, Research and Science.
Compensation: Stipend available to qualified full-time intern.
Skill(s): Fundraising; legal, social media and online marketing; familiarity with research institutions and creative enterprises, and intellectual property

General Intern
Public Interest Intellectual Property Advisors seeks dedicated, proactive interns to initiate and manage diverse projects. Flexible commitment: half to full time, minimum 2 months. Stipend available for qualified full-time interns. Responsibilities: research, grant-writing and administration; communicating with law firms, intellectual property practitioners and patent and trademark office representatives worldwide; responding to and processing new client applications.
What you bring: Communication and computer skills (website development experience a plus!), strong work ethic, interest in law, intellectual property and international commercial relations.
